Repair your Disk Permissions
Use OS X's disk utility to verify disk permissions. Repairing disk permissions helps applications run smoothly. This should be done on a regular basis. You can find disk utility in the following location : Applications>utilities>disk utility
Once Disk Utility is running click on your Macintosh HD on the left and then go to the first aid tab. There will be a button at the bottom right verify disk. Click this and it will start to check your disk.
It's also sensible whilst your in the first aid tab to verify/repair your disk. This checks your hard drive for any possible file system problems that can often cause issues down the line. You will need to boot from you install discs to repair the drive.
Tidy your Hard Disk
Mac OS X makes extensive use of Virtual Memory (VM), which requires free disk space on your startup disk. If you startup disk is nearly full, your Mac's performance will degrade considerably. Remove unwanted files and empty your trash can.
Use a Maintenance script to tidy for you
There are many automatic scripts out there that will tidy and clean for you. We suggest you download one and run it regularly. Titanium have created a great couple of App's for doing just that.
