Everyone in the IT world always talks about backing up! Do you do it? How do you do it? Why are you not doing it? It does get boring we know but seriously, everyone should be backing up their data if it means anything to them. The cost of an external hard drive these days is minimal and all new Macs come with TIme Machine - Apple's automated backup software. There's no reason why every Mac user shouldn't be backing up.
How do you do it?
Many of our customers including business and home users, often ask us if we can help them with a reliable stress free backup solution. Apple have done very well to reduce the amount of stress involved by introducing Time Machine, their automated backup software build into OS X. This allows you to easily backup to a connected hard drive or Time Capsule using a beautiful user interface to recover lost data. This is brilliant but not the final solution if you truly want your data to be backed up correctly.
We believe to have a truly effective backup system in place. You need your data on two separate devices, (your Mac and an external hard drive), along with a copy of that data off site. By off site, we mean away from the primary place you keep your computer and external hard drive backup.
Home users do not typically do this and in our experience this can be a disaster if they rely on the data they keep on their Mac.
Business users also struggle to back up off site. Many have no solution in place and the few that do generally rely on a someone physically swapping a selection of tapes, or hard drives every other day or so. This isn't practical and it doesn't happen the way it should. Someone will leave the back up tape where it's not meant to be. Tapes will run out and new ones will need to be purchased at a high cost. A tape back up solution in our eyes, are outdated and expensive.
